Ex d panels

Various types of Ex de enclosures
Various types of Ex de enclosures
The Ex d protection method is used on panels when ignition capable components or systems are to be located in a hazardous area. The inner parts are for the most part industrial equipment such as PLC’s, contactors, transformers, or other ignition capable components.

Ex d panels are produced according to EN/IEC 60079-1 and is basically a technique where you confine an explosion to the inner barriers of an enclosure. In other words, it does not prevent an explosion from happening by preventing the external potential explosive atmosphere from entering into the enclosure, but prevents migration of such an explosion to spread to the outside of the enclosure.

There are basically 2 different types of enclosure available, depending on gas group in question. The gas group type IIB enclosures are flanged types where the flanged surface acts as a flame path for the enclosure.

These enclosures may be used in gas group IIA and IIB.

The other type is a IIC enclosure with treaded lid where the flame path is part of the treads.
This type may be used in all gas groups.

Ex d panels are individually certified as the content differs according to equipment mounted inside size and heat dissipation. Most enclosures are supplied with an Ex e enclosure flanged to it for so called indirect entry.

Ex d Gas group type IIB enclosures

This flanged type is the most commonly used Ex d type of enclosure when used. They are normally used to house control systems, motor starters or other ignition capable electrical equipment that needs to be located in the Hazardous area.

We can supply them in a number of different sizes and materials depending on the project requirements. The most common application is when a client wants to have the logic on a skid or a frame so that he can supply a fully tested piece of equipment.

Ex d Gas group type IIC enclosures

This treaded type of Ex d enclosures are often used on field instruments, due to practical purposes.

Some clients prefer to use this type of enclosure because they normally can be opened in a shorter period of time for inspections, but only in rare cases is this based on IIC gas group requirement.

The boxes/enclosures can be supplied in various sizes and materials but access to inner parts is more restricted due to the circular lid.
